Exact calculation method
Tile area in square feet = tile length (in) × tile width (in) ÷ 144. Tiles before allowance = surface area (sq ft) ÷ tile area (sq ft). Apply the allowance and round the final tile and box counts up. Internal calculations retain full precision. Final tile and box quantities are rounded up only when a whole purchase quantity requires it.
Worked example
A 10 ft × 10 ft surface is 100 sq ft. A 12 in × 12 in tile is 1 sq ft. At 10%, the result is 110 whole tiles; 12 tiles per box requires 10 boxes.

Measure surfaces in feet and enter actual tile dimensions in inches. Check the coverage or tile count printed on the box.
Plan for this material
Calculation method: Tile area = length × width. Tiles before allowance = surface area ÷ tile area. Multiply by 1 + allowance rate and round the final tile count up.
Example: A 100 sq ft surface using 12 in × 12 in tiles needs 100 tiles before allowance and 110 tiles at 10%.
Before calculating: Use the actual tile dimensions, and measure each wall or floor section separately. Confirm whether package coverage includes nominal grout joints.
- Use actual tile dimensions and check how the manufacturer states carton coverage. Nominal sizes and grout-joint conventions can make a dimension-based count differ from packaged coverage.
- Edge cuts, breakage, centered layouts, and openings affect usable pieces. Diagonal or repeating layouts may need a different allowance than a simple straight layout, so no single percentage fits every tile project.
- The result estimates field tile only. Confirm specialty pieces and separate requirements for grout, adhesive, membranes, and trim before purchasing.
